WordPress search plugins: Relevanssi vs Ajax Search Lite vs Better Search

Compare relevance controls, live results, database needs, free and paid features, and site licenses for three WordPress search plugins.

A visitor searches for a useful article that you know exists, but the result page sends them elsewhere or returns nothing. The problem may be the words being indexed, the ranking rules, or the interface through which the visitor searches. Choosing a search plugin starts with identifying which of those layers needs to change.

Relevanssi, Ajax Search Lite, and Better Search approach WordPress search with different priorities. This comparison uses official listings and pricing reviewed on October 11, 2026. Paid editions are discussed as upgrades to the same products. We have not benchmarked response times or scored result quality, and vendor performance claims are not treated as measured outcomes.

Separate relevance from the search interface

Relevance determines what matches and which result appears first. The interface determines whether users see suggestions while typing, which filters they can use, and how results are presented. A polished live-search box can still return the wrong content. A strong index can still be connected to a confusing form. Write down the desired behavior for both layers.

Build a small query list from real content: a title word, a synonym, a phrase, a short product code, and an intentionally unsuccessful search. State which page should appear for each. Our analytics-plugin comparison covers broader measurement choices; a useful search review still needs expected answers, not only a count of searches.

Plugin Useful fit Free and paid boundary Budget consideration
Relevanssi Configurable relevance in ordinary WordPress search Free indexed search; Premium adds document content and cross-site capabilities Premium €120 annual or €402 permanent; unlimited sites
Ajax Search Lite Live suggestions and a configurable search box Free live search; Pro expands sources, filters and integrations Pro lifetime Single displayed at €99 for one site
Better Search Replacing default results with database-backed relevance Free core; Pro adds fuzzy matching, slug search and other tools Pro $99/year for one active site; larger plans available

Relevanssi

Relevanssi replaces the standard WordPress search behavior with an index and configurable relevance. The directory listing describes partial matching, phrase searches, weighting, highlighted excerpts, and indexing of custom fields and taxonomies. It generally uses the existing search form and results template, which can suit a site that wants better matching without redesigning its entire search experience.

The index needs database capacity. The listing gives a rough planning estimate of three times the size of the posts table, rather than promising negligible storage use. Build the index around the content visitors actually need. Indexing unnecessary fields can add work and produce confusing matches; excluding meaningful fields can make otherwise relevant pages invisible.

The Premium page lists €120 for an annual license and €402 for a permanent license, both covering unlimited websites. Annual renewal is manual, not an automatic subscription. Permanent updates and support are qualified in the FAQ as lasting for the current major version. Document content indexing requires supported attachments and an external extraction service; image-only scans need OCR first.

Strength: detailed control over what the index contains and how it ranks matches. Limitation: capacity planning and custom-query integration matter. A separate JavaScript or headless search endpoint will need explicit integration; installing the plugin does not guarantee that every custom search box starts using its index.

Ajax Search Lite

Ajax Search Lite focuses on live results while someone types. Its official listing includes configurable presentation, category and post-type filters, and ways to place or replace the search form. This is useful when a visible search interaction is the main problem. Evaluate how the suggestions work with your header and navigation rather than treating the demo layout as your finished design.

The paid Ajax Search Pro edition expands filtering, search sources, and integrations. The vendor site describes support for custom fields, different result layouts, and numerous page-builder workflows. Document search is also promoted with a dedicated file-content feature path. Confirm the exact extraction and setup requirements for your files instead of assuming that every PDF becomes searchable immediately.

The pricing page defaults to lifetime offers: €99 for one site, €229 for three sites, and €799 for 25 sites. Other site-count selections are available. Production, staging, and development for the same project count as one site. Annual licensing is offered too; the homepage advertises a starting rate of €39/year, but we did not verify every annual selection or its renewal total.

Strength: a focused live-search interface with an expanded paid path. Limitation: presentation settings and third-party integrations require verification on your site. Test keyboard selection and the transition from suggestions to the full results page, especially when the header behaves differently on mobile.

Better Search

Better Search replaces ordinary WordPress results with relevance-based matching and adjustable title/content weights. Its directory page describes MySQL FULLTEXT indexing, internal caching, popular-search tracking, and live suggestions. That makes it a candidate when you want to improve the existing search workflow while keeping administration close to WordPress.

The paid edition adds features including fuzzy matches, slug search, a relevance threshold, and REST integration. The vendor page lists Pro at $99/year for one active site, Pro Multi from $199/year for a range of site counts, and Agency at $599/year for unlimited active sites. Prices exclude VAT. The starting multi-site figure should not be read as the price for every larger allowance.

No separate introductory renewal discount was verified on that page, so confirm the annual renewal total and selected site count during purchase. The current directory requires WordPress 6.9 and PHP 7.4. Its database approach also means that matching behavior depends on the actual database environment and query configuration. A short identifier deserves its own test rather than being assumed equivalent to an ordinary word.

Strength: relevance controls and search activity tools in a familiar WordPress workflow. Limitation: older WordPress installations do not meet the current minimum, and some matching or integration requirements belong to Pro. Start with the free edition if your expected queries can establish whether its core approach suits the site.

Compatibility questions to settle before paying

Relevanssi currently lists WordPress 4.9/PHP 7.1 minimums; Ajax Search Lite lists WordPress 3.5/PHP 7.4. A low WordPress minimum does not establish compatibility with your page builder, membership rules, language plugin, or custom search route. Review the specific integration and test the expected query flow. Also make sure the installed version is current.

For restricted content, test as a logged-out visitor and as each relevant role. Results should not reveal private content through titles, excerpts, or suggestions. For a multilingual site, query each language and confirm that results use the right language and destination. Translation of a results page is not automatically the same as indexing translated content.

For stores and knowledge bases, separate matching from availability. A technically matching item may still be unsuitable because it is retired, restricted, or not part of the intended catalog. Decide how those exclusions are managed. If a custom frontend queries an API, confirm that the endpoint actually uses the plugin and applies the same access rules.

Choose by expected answers and maintenance capacity

Choose Relevanssi when relevance and indexing control are the main requirements and you have room to maintain the index. Choose Ajax Search Lite when live suggestions are the immediate need, then evaluate Pro against specific source and filter requirements. Choose Better Search when its default-search replacement and database controls match your site, with Pro considered for the features you can demonstrate a need for.

After configuration, save the query list and expected results as a local acceptance checklist. Revisit it when you add a new content type or change the search template. Review unanswered searches to identify missing content or vocabulary, but do not assume every query should match something. A clear no-results state can be more useful than a plausible-looking list of irrelevant pages.
